David Walker DipABRSM
in General August 20, 2015
David started playing piano at the age of five. He was tutored initially by his late Grandfather from the age of five and took further lessons with his music teacher in Cumnock. At primary school, he played piano for assemblies and musical items in class.
2006 saw David enter Cumnock Academy where he took up clarinet and saxophone, whilst playing in many of the school bands, like the wind band and jazz band. David also continued to play piano for the school choirs. He enjoyed playing for the choirs and accompanying soloists. In his senior secondary years he started to take rehearsals for the school musical projects. In S6 he formed a small woodwind ensemble, as well as taking responsibility for organising, rehearsing and conducting the school wind band.
David has also taken his music further afield, having played percussion for the school brass band in Perth, and touring with the music department to Italy in S2 and London in both S4 and S6. He played organ in church in Cumnock, and worked with the church choir for almost two years before moving away to start at university. Last year he started as organist in another church in Bellshill.
David enjoyed taking part in the school musicals each year: from S4 he started taking rehearsals. He was also asked to be part of the band in the pit for shows from S4 – a rare event for a school pupil to be able to do this along with professional musicians. He has played piano in the band for Cumnock Academy productions of Joseph, Grease, Hairspray, and most recently, We Will Rock You, as well as Clarinet and Alto Saxophone in Gershwin’s Crazy for You.
David’s musical studies have already resulted in qualifications: in June 2011 he attained ABRSM Grade VIII Clarinet with Distinction, and in December of the same year, Grade VIII Piano again with Distinction. These achievements helped him to secure a guaranteed unconditional place and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where he is still continuing to study for his Bachelor of Education in Music.
He is currently studying clarinet at the RCS with Lawrence Gill of Scottish Opera, as well as continuing private piano lessons with his tutor Claire Haslin, also of RCS and Scottish Opera. David recognises both his tutors as being inspirational and genuinely fabulous.
In June 2013 David was successful in gaining his ABRSM Diploma in Piano. This entailed a 35 minute programme, programme notes, sight reading and an interview.
David continues his honours degree between the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the University of Glasgow, he has taught in primary school and a number of secondary schools, whilst also keeping up with the demands of RCS and UofG. There is a lot of work involved, but when able to do so, David likes to relax with a good book, or going to orchestras, opera, musicals or anything else which takes his fancy,
In November 2013 he played alongside the clarinettists of the BBC Scottish Symphony orchestra in a side-by-side event, and at Easter 2014 he played in Scottish Opera Connect Orchestra.
David has fitted in really well with the Aeolian since starting at the beginning of the 2013/14 season, and looks forward to continuing work with the choir. His musical talents are obvious and his wit and humour add to the enjoyment of a Tuesday night.
David is a thoroughly likeable young man and we hope to have his enormous talent with us for a long time.
